Rest and Remember

This summer you all have blessed me with the gift of a sabbatical. It’s hard to believe that this Sunday will be my last day with you for three months! I am so thankful for the opportunity and promise that in the midst of working on my Doctorate of Ministry and spending some time with my family that I will rest and remember many things (including how grateful I am for Beargrass)!

In our fast paced, demanding society we find ourselves on the go from the moment we awake until the moment we actually fall asleep at night. Resting, keeping Sabbath (Shabbat) is rare in our world and yet it is something of utmost importance in our relationship with God and in our lives. This weekend we will reflect a little on Sabbath and what it means to rest and remember our divine creation and the freedom we have in God. I hope you will be able to join us in worship this weekend!

Rev. Lowe will be on sabbatical May 27-August 27, 2013. Hospital visitation will be covered by ministers and staff as well as our elders who are on-call. If you have a concern or pastoral care need please contact the church office or be in touch with Leigh, John, Kelley, or Steven. Leigh will be sending out prayer chain emails. When I was growing up, I remember being encouraged to try to attend church and Sunday School every week. Attendance awards were given out. Some of you may recall similar experiences. I have heard a few folks say that it is unreasonable to expect people to be here every week—we’re just too busy with community events, athletic activities, traveling, etc. Or the weather or fatigue or illness gets in the way.

But I read a recent copy of the “Friendship Flash” and noticed a long list of people who had perfect Sunday School attendance in April. Then I became curious about attendance in the Round Robin Class and discovered that about half of their class also had perfect attendance in April. Here are the “Greatest Generation” people who made the list.

Pentecost Party this Weekend!

Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.    Acts 2:1, 2, 4

This weekend’s scripture passage from Acts 2 describes one of the most exciting stories in the Bible! After Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples gathered in one place. Acts 1:14 tells us that they were “constantly devoting themselves to prayer.” They were watching and waiting…preparing themselves for God’s next move. The next move happened in a grand and glorious way on the day we call “Pentecost.” God gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church—and the Good News was not just given to the disciples, but to people from “every nation” who heard it in their “native language.” The Spirit of the Lord empowered and transformed them.

We have a grand “Pentecost Party” planned for this weekend as we celebrate the ways the Spirit of the Lord is moving within us and rising among us! Plan to attend—and invite your family and friends.

Southern Gospel Concert. We are glad to welcome “The Infinite Realm” back to Beargrass for our Saturday service at 5:30 pm. They led a wonderful worship service last year—so if you enjoy toe-tappin’, hand-clappin’ Southern Gospel music, please join us. (A “second-pass” love offering will be received to support their music ministry.)

Elder/Deacon Ordination Services. Just as the Spirit empowered the early leaders of the Church, Beargrass continues to pray that the Spirit will empower the leaders of our church. We will have ordination services for our new elders, deacons, and youth elders and deacons on Sunday.

“Partners with a Purpose.” Just as the Good News was shared with people of all nations, we continue to make our mission and outreach efforts a priority at Beargrass. Around 75 youth and adults will participate in mission trips this summer—one to Guatemala and one to Heifer International. We will have a “second pass” offering on Sunday and become “shareholders” and supporters of these mission trips.

All-Church Dinner, Dessert Auction, Children’s Musical. Just as the members of the early Church gathered to break bread and participate in the life of the faith community, we will gather on Sunday at 5:00 pm for an all-church dinner and dessert auction. Then we will get a chance to support our children who have been working hard to present “Malice in the Palace.”

As we gather around the Table on Pentecost, let us give thanks for the gift of the Spirit to the Church. Let the Spirit of the Lord rise among us! See you at church.

We are inviting all of the members and friends of Beargrass to become “Partners with a Purpose” as we support our young people as they prepare for their mission trips this summer. By participating in a special “second pass” offering on Pentecost, Sunday, May 19, we will become “shareholders” in these mission trips. Our middle school youth will be traveling to the headquarters of Heifer International in Perryville, Arkansas. Our high school youth will be working with an ecumenical ministry in Guatemala known as “Hope for Tomorrow.” They will be serving meals, caring for orphans, and doing a variety of projects in Santiago and Guatemala City.

And we have a wonderful problem. Over 75 people will be representing Beargrass on these trips! (This is more people than the average-sized congregation in our country.) The youth program is growing and our young people and their sponsors have been working really hard to cover the expenses for these trips. But as a church family we need to help them reach their goal. Once every 12 years, the two most expensive youth mission trips in the “rotation” happen during the same summer—and this is the summer. We believe these experiences are life-changing for our young people and so we try to make them affordable for the families of our youth.

So . . . we hope to receive at least $7770 for our “second pass” offering on May 19. Please consider a generous gift and know that your investment in our young people will pay dividends for years to come. Thank you for your prayers and participation as we become “Partners with a Purpose” on Pentecost.

The Children’s Choir will present the musical, Malice in the Palace, on Sunday, May 19, at 6:30 pm. Our children’s choirs will take you on an adventure back to the time of Queen Esther. This story has all the components of a great adventure. You will meet an evil villain, a beautiful heroine, a king, and so much more. Come and join us as we take you inside King Ahasuerus’ Palace and treat you to a fun adventure. It is an evening that you will not want to miss.

Do you bake pies, cookies, cakes, cobblers, or other yummy desserts? Do you like to eat pies, cookies, cakes, cobblers, or other yummy desserts? Do you like to help our young people have amazing, life-changing experiences! Well, do I have an opportunity for you!

On Sunday, May 19, the youth will host their annual Spaghetti Dinner and Dessert Auction. Dinner will begin at 5:00 pm and the auction promptly at 5:30 pm in the Activities Building. The cost of the dinner is a donation. (Think about what you might spend on a family dinner “out”!) Get some friends together, tell your people about this dinner, and join us on May 19.
