Discover the Disciples

We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ we welcome all the the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.

Some scholars describe the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as “the most American” denomination. Our faith is based on free thought and speech and emphasized education and individual responsibility. Our number one basic belief is that the communion Table is for all of us.

We are Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, and Independents, kids, retirees, married with children, single parents, and people living alone. With this kind of diversity, we sometimes get in each other’s way. We argue and wrangle and emphatically debate. It makes us stronger and firmer in our convictions. We love it because progress was never made without disagreements. We sit side by side, praying for quick and peaceful resolutions to the issues that challenge our nation and world.

We’ve accepted women as ordained clergy, not 20 years ago, but over 120 years ago. Of all the mainline churches, we have the highest level of education, yet one of the lowest levels of income, because we tend to become teachers, nurses, and social workers. Texas Christian University is a Disciples college that opened its doors in 1873 to students of all religions and both sexes. Other schools include Transylvania University and Lexington Theological Seminary. Though we have not always been as inclusive as we should have been, we support Jarvis Christian College and Inman Christian Center. Our little denomination that no ones heard of has three of the largest African-American churches in the country.

The following are some reasons that many people have chosen Beargrass and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for their church home:

  • A weekly celebration of communion.
  • A willingness not to tolerate, but to welcome and celebrate differences.
  • An emphasis on Christian living that is descriptive, rather than a harsh, legalistic approach.
  • Ecumenical integrity that allows for an open, inclusive, and pluralistic approach to religion and life.
  • Consensus is in the person of Christ and not to the conformity of doctrine or creed.
