St Matthews Farmers Market Announces COVID-19 Responsive 2020 Season at 4124 Shelbyville Road

The St. Matthews Farmers Market will open for the 14th season on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at 4124 Shelbyville Road, two doors down, while the Beargrass campus is closed due to COVID-19. This location is the site of the former St. Matthews Woman’s Cluband is behind Owens Medical Plaza. We are grateful to Mercedes-Benz of Louisville for use of the space, to Evan Williams for hand sanitizer, and to WaterStep for the bleach maker for cleaning.  Hours of operation are Saturdays through September 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Farmers markets are essential businesses and are vital to food access for consumers and the livelihoods of farmers.

This season, farmers markets are transitioning from community gathering spaces to transaction-based markets, or IN & OUT markets. Operational and procedural changes were made to protect customers, farmers, and volunteers and to mitigate the spread of disease, including following all guidance provided by the Kentucky Cabinet for Public Health (KCPH).

In addition to integrating the KCPH, Kentucky Department of Agriculture, and Metro Louisville Department of Health and Wellness guidance, we required that our farmers and other market partners adhere to best practices as outlined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to reduce the exposure and spread of coronavirus COVID-19.

Patrons should enter the market at the stoplight at Shelbyville Road and Thierman Lane, and park in the rear parking lot at Owens Medical Plaza.

The market layout is focused on health and safety. Patrons are encouraged to come, queue up, practice social distancing, and purchase what they need – but not linger.  Masks are required to enter the market and only 1 person per household may enter at a time. Glove are encouraged and will be available at the entry. Attendance will be strictly controlled to maintain appropriate social distance, and when queue lines are full, patrons must wait in their cars.

We are operating as an open-air grocery with only those items deemed essential; produce, meat, dairy, and food products like honey and jams, as well as bedding plants and hygiene products such as soap. No restroom is available. Crowds are prohibited but everyone is welcome! To learn more and to see the list of participating farms, visit https://smfarmersmarket.com/about-smfm/covid19-special-operating-procedures/
