Faith In Action: Supporting Refugees in Uncertain Times – A Call to Compassion & Community

Sunday, February 23rd 10 – 11 AM • The Chapel

Dear Beargrass Family, Recent announcements from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) highlight several global emergencies—Sudan, DR Congo, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. The numbers are overwhelming—120 million people have been displaced from their homes, with 43 million recognized as refugees. This crisis hits close to home—and to our hearts.

On January 20, the presidential administration issued an executive order titled “Realigning the United States Refugee Admissions Program.” This order indefinitely pauses refugee resettlement in the U.S., leaving thousands of families in limbo. It also jeopardizes the entire resettlement infrastructure—including Kentucky Refugee Ministries (KRM), our longtime mission partner. KRM now faces severe funding cuts, making it even harder to support the families we sponsor and the broader refugee community.

Dr. Flowers’ sermon “Least of All” on February 9th spoke powerfully to what it means to be a Matthew 25 church. From my vantage point, Beargrass has long demonstrated its heart for serving “the least of these”—especially in our commitment to welcoming refugees and helping them rebuild their lives with dignity. Our work in this area began in 1975 with a family of three from Vietnam and has grown over the decades alongside the dedicated and stellar work of KRM. Beargrass has directly assisted dozens of families and scores of individuals, and indirectly served many more.

A Call to Faith In Action

Many of you have asked how you can help. To that end, I personally invite you to join us Sunday, February 23rd, 10 – 11 AM in the Beargrass Chapel. We will meet to discuss the future of refugee resettlement in these unprecedented times and explore how we as a church can continue to stand in solidarity with refugees and KRM.

Support Kentucky Refugee Ministries (KRM)

If you feel moved to take action now, you can give today to help KRM continue its vital work despite funding cuts. Your contribution will directly assist refugee families in Louisville with housing, legal aid, education, and community support.

Beargrass, thank you for your generosity, hospitality, and unwavering heart for our refugee neighbors. Your love and commitment have made a difference for so many over the years. I hope you will join us as we seek to do the same in this moment of need.

With gratitude, Mike Puckett
