Lights, Camera, Action—Beargrass Premiering on WHAS TV 11 This Sunday

We are proud to announce a major initiative to create community-wide awareness about Beargrass and broadly share what who we are as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Starting this weekend, on the first Sunday of each month from 10:30-11am WHAS-TV 11 will broadcast a new episode of “Beargrass: A Place Called Home” that will be unique and different from any other religious broadcast in Louisville. This audience is expected to begin with up to 10,000 local viewing households and grow from there each month, which will of course will help us reach people who may have given up on church or those who could be going through major life transitions and are looking for a supportive, loving community.

Our unique format opens with a dynamic three-minute video that features our historical heritage through the years using the theme “A Place Called Home” and then cut to different members each month discussing why they call Beargrass “home.” We follow with uplifting music from the Praise Team, and inspirational anthem from our Choir, and an uplifting message from Trey (note the sermon is pre-recorded and adapted from previous Beargrass sermons – NOT the sermon for the current Sunday). Then we invite audience participation with one of our other ministers sharing the communion meditation inviting viewers the opportunity to take communion with us at Christ’s table – open to all – and offer to provide communion to them at home through a welcome packet kit mailed before the next broadcast. Instead of asking for a monetary donation as all religious broadcasts do, we will give viewers a chance to donate to an unaffiliated local charity through our monthly “Reverse Offering” partner (WaterStep for this broadcast). Following an invitation to join us for in-person worship, we will close with a feature on a different Beargrass Ministry Spotlight (Pedal Power for this inaugural broadcast).

In addition to the community-wide viewership of the actual Sunday morning program, an added benefit is that Beargrass will also be featured in a monthly segment on the WHAS-TV morning show, “Great Day Live” on the Friday morning episode preceding our monthly Sunday broadcast. Also, highlights of this interview appearance will be placed on WHAS TV 11’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/WHAS11/ (380,000 followers), and we will be provided some 15 and 30 second promotion spots for the upcoming Sunday broadcast as well.

The project was introduced by the Evangelism Team to the Executive Board and has become a joint venture along with our Multimedia Team, Outreach Teams, Creative Worship Team, our ministers, musicians, staff, and many others. We are grateful for the support of so many people to make this happen with a special thank you to Jay Sheldon who worked tirelessly to film, edit, and produce this broadcast, as well as the core production team of Gary Straub, Alan Forsythe, Penny Peavler, Jay Sheldon, and Trey Flowers.

Please help get the word out to set your DVRs to record this inaugural broadcast this Sunday at 10:30am on WHAS TV 11 (if you don’t have a DVR, you can also catch it live or on demand on our YouTube channel, where the episode will simultaneously live-premiere at the same time as the WHAS broadcast)! And be sure to invite friends and relatives to watch the broadcast as well.
