God and the Problem of Evil

By Daniel Spurlock

Have you ever asked any of the following questions? “If God is all-loving, all-powerful and really cares about us, why is there pain, suffering and evil in the world?” “And why is there so much of it?” “And even more, why doesn’t God stop it?”  “Why did my loved one die of cancer, or in a terrible accident?”  “Why is there so much crime in so many places?” “Why are there tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes that destroy so much property and lives?” The questions could go on and on. They are all very tough questions. And they are clearly very common questions. If any of us have never asked God, ourselves or others any of these kinds of questions…then we’re probably not from this planet.

So how DO we deal with pain, suffering and/or evil in humanity? How do we go about trying to understand where God is in all this? And most concerning of all, how can we cope and survive when pain, suffering or evil of some kind hits us hard in our own lives? Is there hope? Yes!  Can we find some kind of comfort and inner peace? Yes! Can we truly know and experience God’s love for us through it all? Yes! Is God really there? Absolutely yes!

These are some of the questions we will explore in an effort to find answers in the Fall session of the Spurlock Bible Study. We will meet every Thursday beginning September 5th in the Fellowship Hall, as well as on  Zoom. Join us with a brown-bag light supper at 6:30PM; and the class is from 7:00-8:15. For more information, and to access the bible study on Zoom, contact Debbie Spurlock at [email protected].

Are you ever troubled by the problems of pain and suffering, in your life, the lives of those close to you, or in the world? Do you sometimes wonder if God is really there or really cares? The Bible addresses our questions and concerns. Join us in the Spurlock Bible Study this Fall as we explore God’s presence and purpose in it all.
