The Lens of Lent: Oversight

The theme for the upcoming messages is “The Lens of Lent.” What comes to your mind when you hear the word “Lent?” Many of us think about “giving something up”—like chocolate or an unhealthy habit. I have also encouraged people to “take something on”—daily devotional time, a study, a renewed commitment to prayer, or new outreach efforts. When we look at our lives through the lens of Lent it gives us the opportunity for introspection and self-reflection. With that in mind, I will share a four-sermon series: “Oversight,” “Insight,” “Hindsight,” and “Foresight.” The story we will hear this weekend is about Nicodemus’ night-time conversation with Jesus. Ol’ Nick doesn’t get any straight answers. Jesus confounds him and he wonders, “How can these things be?” Jesus says, “You must be born from above.” Nick is stuck in literal land. Jesus is speaking of the realm of God. It sounds like Nick needs some “night vision” goggles!
